Siyabonga Nomvete was on target for South Africa against Jamaica |
World Cup hosts South Africa recorded a rare win on Wednesday, beating Jamaica 2-0 in a friendly. It was only the third victory in 16 games for Bafana Bafana, whose team of locally-based players have been on a three-week training camp in Germany. Surprise Moriri and Siyabonga Nomvete, both recalled to the squad in the last month, scored the goals in the second-half to earn the victory. Jamaica only arrived on the morning of the hastily arranged friendly match. The Jamaicans were last minute replacements for China who pulled out of the game, blaming the recent flight chaos in Europe caused by the volcanic ash cloud. Jamaica created chances in the first-half but poor finishing prevented them from breaking through the Bafana Bafana defence. South Africa, who have dropped to 90th in the world rankings, return home at the weekend. They had scored just five goals in six matches since Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreirra returned last November for a second spell in charge. They then have three more warm-up matches before the opening World Cup game against Mexico in Johannesburg on 11 June.
