Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin will miss the rest of the World Cup after injuring his thigh against Switzerland, team officials said on Wednesday. But the 26-year-old Bayer Leverkusen player will stay at the team's base here as they prepare for Friday's quarter-final against Italy in Hamburg.
"Andriy is distraught that the World Cup is over for him," said Ukraine spokesman Igor Mirochnichenko.
Voronin has started all four of Ukraine's matches at the tournament.
Ukraine qualified for the last eight after beating Switzerland on penalties follow a 0-0 draw in Cologne - but Voronin was substituted 10 minutes before the end of extra time.
Oleg Blokhin's side were hammered 4-0 in their opening group game against Spain, but bounced back to qualify as Group H runners-up.
