There were calls for Lagerback to resign after the World Cup |
Sweden coach Lars Lagerback has revealed he will step down after the 2008 European Championship. "I think neither I nor the federation will want to continue after 2008," the 57-year-old told Swedish newspaper Sundsvalls Tidning.
"I've already been involved for nine years and that's unusually long."
There were calls for Lagerback's resignation after the poor display that led to Sweden's 2-0 defeat by Germany in the second round of the World Cup.
Several Sweden newspapers published opinion polls, with a large majority calling for the coach to step down following the exit.
Lagerback has helped Sweden qualify for four consecutive major tournaments, three in a joint coaching role with Tommy Soderberg.
Sweden begin their qualifying campaign for the Euro 2008 on 2 September with a trip to Latvia.
