Marquez opened the scoring, but Mexico were eventually beaten |
Mexico goalscorer Rafael Marquez said he was sad his side were leaving the World Cup after their 2-1 extra-time defeat by Argentina. Maxi Rodriguez's wonder goal was enough to set up a quarter-final between Argentina and hosts Germany.
"A great goal by Argentina is what eliminated us," he said.
"The Mexico team has worked very well all this time and played a good match against a team that everyone thought would run over us."
Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe added: "It was an even game, just as I expected it to be, and it was a magnificent individual goal that decided it.
"We gave an excellent account of themselves. Once again, though, we didn't achieve what we came to do, which was to reach the quarter-finals at least.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't make the substitutions I'd planned to because of the injuries to (Pavel) Pardo and (Andres) Guardado, and that's very annoying.
"We had Omar Bravo and Guillermo Franco, but I had to put Zinha on to get hold of the ball more."
