Striker Jared Borgetti is set to miss Mexico's two other Group D games after suffering a minor muscle tear in his left leg in the 3-1 win over Iran. "Jared has a grade one muscular injury and we'll test him again in a week," said team doctor Jose Luis Serrano.
"We hope he could be ready for the Portugal match - but we consider it very difficult really," added Serrano.
But Bolton striker Borgetti, Mexico's all-time leading scorer, is expected to be fit for the knockout stages.
Borgetti has scored 38 goals in 76 appearances for Mexco.
