Van der Sar has made a total of 11 World Cup appearances for Holland |
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is pondering his international future in the wake of Holland's exit from the World Cup. The Dutch were eliminated following a bad-tempered 1-0 defeat to Portugal on Sunday and Van der Sar says he will now bide his time before making a decision.
The 35-year-old said: "This is not the right moment. I still have a really bitter feeling about our elimination.
"It's better to take time first and I will sleep on it for a few nights."
Van der Sar won a record 113th cap for Holland against Portugal, but admitted the defeat had soured the occasion.
"It doesn't feel at all like a milestone," he added.
"I must get through the misery first to be able to fully appreciate the record."
Holland coach Marco van Basten revealed this week that he is hopeful of persuading Van der Sar not to quit international football.
He said: "I have already spoken to him, but he wants some thinking time. I can only hope that he stays with us.
"Edwin is not only in the best of shape, he has also proven himself to be a perfect team captain. He is an absolute asset to the team."
Van der Sar added: "I will discuss it with the people for whom such a decision also has consequences."
