Ballack was keen to feature in Germany's opener

The midfielder missed Germany's 4-2 win over Costa Rica on Friday in the opening game because of a calf strain.

But the 29-year-old trained with the squad on Monday for the first time since sustaining the problem on 2 June.

And he said: "I could fully practise and I was happy to work out again, so I am looking forward to the Poland game."

Ballack's return should put an end to a saga that saw him initially declare himself fit enough to play against Costa Rica, before coach Jurgen Klinsmann opted to leave him on the bench.

However, Klinsmann said: "There were no misunderstandings or problems.

"He told me he felt fit and that he was ambitious to play but the doctors said there might be a risk so we, the coaching staff, decided it would not be possible for him to play."

Assistant coach Joachim Low added: "We've always said that if Ballack was able to play, he will definitely play.

"The risk last week was simply too big."

And Chelsea's new signing will certainly start Wednesday's match in Dortmund.

Klinsmann confirmed: "Michael will definitely play in the second game. You can take that for granted."
