Rooney is shown the red card by referee Elizondo

Argentina's Horacio Elizondo showed Rooney the red card after he stamped on Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho during Saturday's World Cup quarter-final.

"The referee was touching distance from the players and he took the decision according to what he saw," he said.

"The referee's decision is final and I have not seen any protest from fans or even team-mates on the field of play."

Meanwhile Nigel Martyn believes Rooney may exact his "revenge" on Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo following their flare-up during the same incident.

Winger Ronaldo appeared to encourage the referee to dismiss Rooney after his stamp on Carvalho.

"Wayne will get some sort of revenge in training," ex-Everton team-mate and keeper Martyn told BBC Five Live Sport.

"Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will then say 'you're all square - get on with it'."

Martyn added: "Ronaldo will now have to look out for some English full-backs."

Rooney, 20, said he held no ill-feeling towards Ronaldo following the incident but added that he was "disappointed" his Old Trafford colleague became involved.

Ronaldo, who has denied that he urged the referee to send off his United team-mate, insisted that Rooney was not furious with him.

"He wished me the best of luck in the World Cup. He told me we had a great team and that if we continued to play like this, we would go far," he stated.

"He wasn't angry with me and, moreover, he told me to completely ignore what the English press has said, that all they wanted was to create confusion, but we are already used to that."

Portugal beat England on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra-time.
