Rooney needs to start the Sweden game, says Butcher |
England have got two wins and two clean sheets after the victory against Trinidad and Tobago - but if they do not play any better make no mistake they will be out of the World Cup sooner rather than later. I felt the whole tempo of the game was wrong from the start. We should have opened up like a Premiership team, put crosses and balls in and got at them for the first 20 minutes, but it didn't happen.
I am very concerned by our lack of form. England can fluke their way through group matches but they will not fluke their way through the knockout stages.
There will be a critical reaction to that performance, but if England wanted to be hard-nosed about it they could put a positive spin on things by pointing to the fact that they are now perfectly placed to win the group.
But I think fans and everybody else would like to see a lot more in terms of a team performance that would give everybody hope that England can actually win the World Cup.
Steven Gerrard stated after the game that England have to improve and will improve. Yes, they might improve, but will it be to a level that they can go on and win it and progress further?
David Beckham said at the start of the tournament that there will be no excuses and for me there can't be. Not this time.
Beckham said there can be no excuses - and he was right |
England will be up against much better opposition as we go forward. We will be up against either Ecuador or Germany in the last 16 and either one will pose a much bigger threat than anything we've seen so far.
Outsiders and other teams will look on and expect us to play better, with far more cohesion and positive play.
And England quite simply have to if they want to take this great opportunity to win the World Cup.
England also need to win that final game against Sweden, not just for the obvious reasons, but to put a marker down for the rest of the tournament.
What England need more than anything else is a spark to get them going, and Wayne Rooney could be the man to provide it.
I don't think Eriksson wanted to put him on when he did, but he had to and I think he did give us something extra.
I also thought Aaron Lennon gave England a new dimension when he came on along the right-flank. He was absolutely terrific.
All the substitutions were right. They worked. Eriksson sent on a 19-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old in Lennon, Rooney and Stewart Downing to do the job of men and they all did well.
It shows he has a lot of faith in his substitutes and he got a response from them as well.
It is the first time since 1982 World Cup that we have won our first two group games so there are positives, but we need a lot more.
Trinidad and Tobago got a lot of people behind the ball, their game plan was very good and worked very well.
But I could see a goal coming and it was good to see Peter Crouch score again. He's been prolific in recent times. It was a World Cup goal for Crouch, which will delight him and he's done very well.
Crouch's goal and the return of Rooney gives Eriksson some big selection decisions over his strikers in view of Michael Owen being substituted again.
And I have to say I wouldn't say for certain what I would do without the benefit of seeing the players close up in training.
I think Rooney needs to start the Sweden game. Owen also needs games and Crouch has been on target. It's quite a poser for Eriksson.
It's another dilemma for Eriksson, but the first priority is to win that next match and find some form at last. We will need to.
