Butcher says FA chiefs must quit

Butcher says boss selection has made the FA "a laughing stock"
Terry Butcher says Football Association chiefs selecting England's new coach must resign - and an appointment should be delayed until after the World Cup.

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren is tipped to be named as Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor on Friday.

Former England captain Butcher told BBC Sport: "I think the chief executive Brian Barwick should resign, along with the whole selection committee.

"The FA is a laughing stock. Scrap this process and delay an appointment."

Butcher believes the new boss should come from one of the four remaining candidates - McClaren, Bolton boss Sam Allardyce, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley, who is set to leave the club at the end of this season, and former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill.

However, Butcher also thinks that Sir Trevor Brooking should head up a new selection group, who would then make a choice after the World Cup.

Motherwell boss Butcher added: "The whole FA selection committee should go and they should now let the dust settle until after the World Cup.

"There is no way they can bring anyone in from outside the candidates we have left, that would be absolutely ridiculous, but if they are going to make an announcement it looks like it will be Steve McClaren.

"Brian Barwick's choice has always been Martin O'Neill. Now they are going to be split because they didn't choose McClaren in the first place.

"Whoever gets the job will go in without the full backing of all of the international committee.

"I think they should all go and get someone like Sir Trevor Brooking in, who knows the game inside out. Let it be his choice, then the person coming in will know they have the full support of the person who picked them.

"Why put ourselves into this position where we have to choose someone before the World Cup? Why do we now need to rush it through and get it done?

"The current people have had a go at it, botched it and then fudged it, so disregard this process, start another one after the World Cup.

"Let's have some sort of purity about this selection process. It's tarnished now."
