Coach Alexandre Guimaraes was left to rue his side's missed chances as Costa Rica made an early exit from Group A at the hands of Ecuador. The South Americans dispatched Guimaraes' side 3-0 in Hamburg meaning Germany and Ecuador both advance to the knockout stages.
And Guimaraes said: "When you miss chances in front of goal you will get punished by these teams.
"We were punished by Germany in our first match and now by Ecuador."
He added: "The game is like that when you miss chances, the other side have no mercy.
"That has been the story for us in these two games."
Guimares also praised opponents Ecuador after their win.

He added: "Ecuador have shown great quality in their past two games.
Striker Paulo Wanchope said that the tournament had been their most disappointing in their history.
"Of the three World Cups we have been to, this has been the worst.
"For the moment, we have to keep our heads up and keep working.
"We had to look to score goals but it did not work out.
Costa Rica meet Poland in Hanover on Tuesday.
