Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimaraes rued the defensive lapses that led to his side's 4-2 defeat to Germany in the opening match of the World Cup. "We managed to level it but then a mistake put the Germans ahead at the break," he said.
"We plugged away and played our game but conceded a third on the counter. We knew what we were up against."
Paolo Wanchope, who scored Costa Rica's goals, added: "Despite losing, our team performed well."
