Akwa's goal against Rwanda last October took Angola to Germany |
Angolan captain Akwa has pledged to atone for his Nations Cup failure in next month's World Cup in Germany. The striker failed to score as Angola exited Egypt 2006 in the first round.
"I had a lot of chances at the Nations Cup but didn't score," said the 29-year-old, who scored the goal that took the Palancas Negras to Germany.
"I've learned from these mistakes and I'm preparing well and working hard so that if I get the same chances in the World Cup, I won't miss."
The striker returned to form in April, scoring a hat-trick as the Angolans thumped Mauritius 5-1 in the Cosafa Cup.
Akwa is both Angola's most capped player and leading scorer, boasting a record of 35 goals in 75 appearances.
The Angolan idol has been without a club since being released by Qatari club Qatar earlier this year but is hoping a good World Cup showing can secure a new contract overseas.
"All players dream to play in one of the best two leagues in the world - in England or in Spain," he explained.
"It is my dream to play in one of those two leagues and if I perform well at the World Cup, I believe I can get a good offer from a European club."
Angola, who will be competing in their first World Cup finals, open their Group D campaign against Portugal on 11 June before playing Mexico and Iran.
Despite taking on such experienced teams, Akwa is confident Luis Oliveira Goncalves' side can cause an upset in Germany.
"Football can be full of surprises and we have seen this many times before," he added.
"If we play well and work together, I believe we can be another surprise."
