![]() | Deisler may skip World Cup ![]() Deisler joins Bayern Munich at the end of the season Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler says he will not be hurried into returning from an injury lay-off, even if that means missing the World Cup. The 22-year-old Hertha Berlin midfielder is widely regarded as his country's most promising young player and a key to Germany's chances at the World Cup. However, Deisler had a third knee operation after breaking down during a league match in October and his comeback has been repeatedly delayed.
"If I'm healthy, I want to show what I can do," said Deisler. "But my health has the highest priority. I really want to play there, but not at any price. "It looks good right now, but I'm healthy when I'm healthy - I won't let myself be pressured." Hertha Berlin doctor Ulrich Schleicher said the midfielder will start training with the club in 10 to 14 days. "I sweat every day in rehab - if the strength returns to my thigh, I'll be completely there," Deisler said. Learning process Germany coach Rudi Voeller said he wasn't bothered by Deisler's doubts about being ready for the World Cup in June and considered it a learning process. "There's still enough time," Voeller. "People forget that Sebastian is very young. He has to learn how to listen to his body and understand it. "I know about that from my own playing days - younger players have to fight more injuries than older ones." Deisler denied his delayed comeback has anything to do with saving himself for Bayern Munich, for whom he will play next season. | Other top World Cup 2002 stories: Links to more World Cup 2002 stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
