![]() | Vassell wins England call ![]() Ledley King has been promoted to the senior squad Promising young strikers Darius Vassell and Michael Ricketts have been included in the England squad for the World Cup warm-up match against Holland on Wednesday. Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has also promoted defenders Wayne Bridge and Ledley King to the 24-man squad for the game in Amsterdam. Experienced front-men Robbie Fowler, Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham have been left out so the likes of Kevin Phillips and Ricketts can have a last chance to stake their claim. Among those omitted are Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, Real Madrid's Steve McManaman and Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux.
"I have explained to all of them that the only reason they are not in this squad is simply that this is our last chance to experiment. "This is the time where we can bring in some new players and see how they do in international football, because after this it will be too late to experiment. "Vassell is strong, quick and has been scoring goals regularly this season," said Eriksson. "He deserves his chance and we certainly believe that he is worth looking at." "The new players have deserved their chance. Eriksson added. "Now it is up to them, and the rest of the players in the squad, to prove themselves at international level."
Bolton striker Ricketts, who had been deliberating whether to pledge his future to Jamaica instead of England, has scored 15 goals in the Premiership so far. Vassell has also impressed with Aston Villa and appears to have got the nod just ahead of West Ham's Jermain Defoe. Southampton defender Bridge gets a chance ahead of Le Saux with Arsenal's Ashley Cole ruled out through injury. "Wayne Bridge is playing very well this season," Eriksson said. "Obviously, he is naturally left-footed, a good defender and very quick in the attack. He is definitely one for the future." England squad to face Holland in Amsterdam: Nigel Martyn (Leeds), David James (West Ham), Richard Wright (Arsenal); Rio Ferdinand (Leeds), Sol Campbell (Arsenal), Gary Neville (Man Utd), Southgate (Middlesbro), Phil Neville (Man Utd), Wayne Bridge (Southampton), Ledley King (Tottenham); David Beckham (Man Utd), Paul Scholes (Man Utd), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Nicky Butt (Man Utd), Joe Cole (West Ham), Darren Anderton (Tottenham), Trevor Sinclair (West Ham); Michael Owen (Liverpool), Emile Heskey (Liverpool), Darius Vassell (Aston Villa), Michael Ricketts (Bolton), Chris Powell (Charlton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Kevin Phillips (Sunderland). |
