Gary McAllister will not be returning to the Scotland squad, national manager Craig Brown has confirmed.

Brown had said that he would like to consider McAllister for a recall following the veteran midfielder's recent form for Liverpool.

But Brown told The Herald: "It seems Gary has decided not to come back and I totally respect that decision.

"I deplore the fact that people have been chasing him on this subject, because all I said was that it would be nice to have him back after the way he has been playing for Liverpool."

Craig Brown admits there is no return
The 37-year-old McAllister had said previously that he would consider a return to international football should injuries create a shortage of midfield players.

Even that appears to have been discounted.

Brown had hoped to include McAllister in his squad for the vital World Cup qualifiers in the Autumn against Belgium and Croatia.

McAllister has not played for Scotland since the defeat by the Czech Republic at Parkhead in March 1999, when he was booed by fans and decided to retire from international duty.
