Barnet's Sowden targets cup final for her 200th goal

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Stacey Sowden has her sights set on scoring twice when Barnet face Nottingham Forest in Thursday's Women's Premier League Cup final.

If 23-year-old striker Sowden hits the net twice it will take her Barnet goal tally to 200 in only 168 appearances.

And she would love nothing more than to reach the double century mark by aiding the Bees to League Cup glory at Wycombe Wanderers' Adams Park.

"It would be fantastic to score my 200th goal in the Cup final," she said.

Sowden added: "It will be a great milestone to reach, but the most important thing is to win the match.

"This is the biggest game in the club's history and I'll be happy whoever scores the goals if we end up with the Cup in our hands."

People might see us as the underdogs

Barnet boss Tracey Kevins

She hit her 13th goal of the current campaign on Sunday, but it came in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall Lionesses which left the Bees bottom of the Premier League.

That will make second-placed Forest favourites to come out on top to collect what would be the club's first major trophy.

Forest manager Lisa Dawkins rejects the "favourites" tag, however. "Barnet are a better side than their position in the table suggests," she said.

"There's not a lot between any of the teams in the Premier League and we've got huge respect for Barnet.

"I think that the team which copes best with their nerves will come through, and hopefully that will be us.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to put our name on a trophy and it would mean the world to everyone involved with the club if we can do it."

Barnet also want to see their name on a major piece of silverware for the first time, and manager Tracey Kevins is confident of success.

"People might see us as the underdogs," said Kevins. "But I don't believe we are and neither do my players.

"We'd had a good run of League and Cup wins before Sunday and although it was obviously disappointing to lose at Millwall, we'll be ready for the final.

"For the players it's going to be an absolutely massive occasion - and they're determined to make it an absolutely great night for Barnet."
