Women's Premier League: Blackburn beat Leeds to go top

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Danielle Sheen hit the winner as Blackburn Rovers moved to the top of the Women's Premier League table with a 2-0 win against Leeds United.

Rovers moved ahead of previous leaders Nottingham Forest on goal difference after Forest were held to a goalless draw at Barnet.

Sunderland climbed four places to third with a 2-1 win against Reading.

Millwall Lionesses collected their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw with Watford.

Blackburn Rovers 2-0 Leeds United

Leeds had the better of the first half but found themselves a goal down when Nicky Twohig scored from a 51st minute penalty.

Sheen, who had been fouled by Natalie Stanhoff for the penalty, made sure of victory when she fired an 18-yard shot into the top corner 12 minutes from time.

Barnet 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Barnet clung on for a point after having Holly Sandow sent off in the 77th minute for a second bookable offence.

But it nevertheless took a superb stoppage time save by goalkeeper Cherie Rowlands from Natalie Clarke to deny Forest victory.

Sunderland 2-1 Reading

Sunderland went two goals ahead in the opening 13 minutes through Keira Ramshaw and Natalie Gutteridge.

And further goals would have followed but for an inspired performance by Reading goalkeeper Michelle Beazley, who pulled off a string of superlative saves.

Nicki Watts reduced the arrears with a headed goal following a 70th minute breakaway by the visitors, but the Black Cats ran out worthy winners.

Millwall Lionesses 2-2 Watford

A spectacular late goal by Holly Miles earned Watford a point that preserved their unbeaten start to the League season.

Sarah Wiltshire had put the Hornets ahead after 11 minutes, but Emma Whitter equalised 11 minutes later then put the Lionesses in front in the 71st minute.

Twelve minutes from time, however, a cleared corner dropped to Miles 30 yards from goal and her first time half-volley flew in off the post.
