Hope Powell stresses importance of England win

England coach Hope Powell insists victory against Austria on Saturday is vital, despite her team having already won their World Cup qualifying group.

Each of Europe's eight group winners will face two-legged play-offs to reach the 2011 finals in Germany.

And three points from their final group game would give England the best chance of a favourable seeding.

"We want to be as high in the play-off seedings as possible, so it's important we beat Austria," said Powell.

United States-based stars Kelly Smith and Karen Carney have been brought back into the squad after being rested for the 3-0 home win against Turkey in July.

And Powell added: "It's nice to have won the group with a game to spare.

"But it's a difficult qualifying process and there's still lots of work to do to get to the World Cup.

"That's why I've selected a strong squad for the match [against Austria]."

Powell will be without striker Lianne Sanderson, who has just made the shock announcement that she is to retire from international football at the age of 22.

But Arsenal's 21-year-old striker Ellen White, who has hit three goals in her first five England appearances, will provide back up for Smith and Eniola Aluko.

White scored on her debut in March's convincing 3-0 home win against Austria but Powell believes they will prove tougher opponents on their home soil.

"The Austrians have learned and improved during the qualifying campaign and it will not be an easy match for us on Saturday," commented Powell.

"So we'll have to be totally focused because we have a two-fold task - winning this game and preparing for the play-offs, which are only a few weeks away."

England will not have their ranking in the play-off seedings confirmed until the final group games are played across Europe next week.

England squad: Brown (Everton), Chamberlain (Chelsea), Bassett (Birmingham City), Bradley (Lincoln), Johnson (Everton), Rafferty (Chelsea), A. Scott (Boston Breakers), Stoney (Chelsea), Susi (Chelsea), Unitt (Everton), F. White (Arsenal), Chapman (Chicago Red Stars), Houghton (Arsenal), J. Scott (Everton), Williams (Everton), Aluko (Atlanta Beat), Carney (Chicago Red Stars), Clarke (Lincoln) K. Smith (Boston Breakers), S. Smith (Lincoln), E. White (Arsenal), Yankey (Arsenal).
