The Ladies came back from a goal down to win 4-1

Sunderland Ladies made a fine start to their FA Women's Premier League Cup campaign with a 4-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Despite going a goal down the Ladies roared back to score four times without reply and book a first round tie at Lincoln on 14 September.

Goals for Sunderland's Sarah Danby and Leanne Stokes cancelled out Rachel Skeemer's opener for the visitors.

Natalie Gutteridge and Steph O'Brien completed the scoring after the break.

Manager Mick Mulhern was delighted with the response of his side following their early setback.

"The girls showed a lot of character to come back from a goal down," he said.

"We have a number of new players in the team and you never know how they will react when things go against them but we stuck to the game plan and didn't panic.

"It was an excellent team performance."
