The NI women's squad in training for the English match |
Nigel Worthington has thrown his support behind the Northern Ireland women's team as they prepare to take on mighty England in a Euro 2009 qualifier. The NI men's team boss was at Greenmount College on Tuesday as the women continued their build-up to Thursday's game at Mourneview Park in Lurgan.
"There is a gulf between the two associations in terms of finances and resources, but that will not stop our girls from going out and having a go," said Worthington.
"We all want to win - there is no doubt in that. The buzz that the girls will get will be tremendous."
Northern Ireland have had a tough run of international fixtures, losing 4-0 to Spain and 5-0 to Belarus. Their last encounter with England ended in a 4-0 defeat.

"It is a big game, but we could be history makers. It would be fantastic to get our first three points against the English," said Alfie Wylie, manager of the NI women.
It is a game we are very much looking forward to and one which will hopefully enhance the image and reputation of women's and girls football in Northern Ireland."
Speaking ahead of her first match as captain, full-back Kelly Bailie insisted they were not alarmed at facing the worldclass England players.
"It is definitely an honour on my part. It will be an historic night, and I will try to lift and help players as much as I can. I do not think any of the players will feel intimidated. We will not hold back."
