Barwick is an admirer of England coach Hope Powell

Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick is backing Hope Powell to lead England to the Women's World Cup quarter-finals.

Powell's team know a 2-0 win from Monday's final group game against Argentina will put them through.

"Hope is a very accomplished coach, conscientious and brave. I've got a lot of time for her," said Barwick, who is in China to support England.

"This team grew up with her and they've got great confidence in her too."

He added: "There's still a job to be done against Argentina, but the aim is to go as far as we can in the tournament."

Barwick was at the Shanghai Stadium for Friday's goalless draw with world champions Germany.

In what was the shock result of the tournament to date, England produced arguably their finest performance of Powell's nine years in charge.

"It was a fantastic performance, full of guts, character and determination. Germany have got an awesome reputation, but we handled them marvellously," said Barwick.

"It was one of Hope's special nights."

On Monday, Barwick will sit alongside Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development, as he urges the women's team towards the knock-out stage.

"We care about women's football at the FA and I'm here to show a level of support for the game," said Barwick.

"England being at the World Cup is a big deal for women's football and they're entitled to get the support."
