Stars of 1984 show Reds the way
Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen celebrate with the European Cup
Souness, Dalglish and Hansen celebrate in 1984
Compare the 1983/1984 and current Liverpool squads

Liverpool's achievement of reaching three cup finals in the same season is unique and by the end of the season they will have played 63 matches.

Much has been made of the demands placed on Gerard Houllier's squad and the need for the Liverpool manager to rotate his team.

But compared to the 1983/1984 squad, Liverpool's current stars seem to have had it easy.

This season, no-one has played in all of Liverpool's matches. Dutch goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has appeared in the most games, missing just two so far.

In total, 28 players have been used by the club. Seven players have appeared 50 times or more.

In 1984, Liverpool reached both the Milk Cup and European Cup finals and finished the season having played 66 matches.

Four of their cup matches went into extra-time, whereas this year, none of Liverpool's games have reached 120 minutes.

Four of the 1983/1984 squad played all 66 possible matches, among them Alan Hansen, with four others recording over sixty appearances.

In total, 10 of their squad played in more than 50 games and just 16 players were used that season.

The centre-back partnership of Hansen and Mark Lawrenson - who will be covering Liverpool's Uefa Cup final against Alaves for BBC Sport - played 131 games between them that season.

The only game Lawrenson missed was the Milk Cup semi-final first leg against Walsall.
