York collapse embarasses Walker

York City
York have lost their last three games

York City manager Colin Walker has said he was embarassed by his side's 6-1 thrashing at Crawley on Saturday.

It was York's biggest defeat since losing 6-0 at Carlisle three years ago, and Walker said that the performance was unacceptable.

Walker told BBC Radio York: "That can't be tolerated ever again. I'm a very, very angry man.

"We just crumbled, the team went under. It was absolutely and totally embarassing," he added.

"We have been the form team since I took over. Quite recently that's gone the other way, and we have to question why."

Walker was disappointed with his side's defending, particularly from set-pieces, and pointed the finger of blame at his central defenders.

"Dave McGurk, Danny Parslow and Darren Craddock, most of the time they've played as a three [at centre-back] they've done really well," said Walker.

"But they've got to take a really big serious look at themselves now."

York have now suffered three straight defeats and Walker has a tricky decision whether or not to retain 18-year-old goalkeeper Josh Mimms for Tuesday's game with Stafford Rangers.

But Walker refused to blame him for the rout at Crawley and said: "I felt for him, he didn't have any help in front of him. It's going to prey on his mind."

Maybe we need more leaders out there, more communication from everyone

Dave McGurk

York captain McGurk admitted the team's defending must improve: "The lads in front of [the keeper] including myself, we've got to look at ourselves, we've conceded far too many goals this season.

"Defensively we haven't been good enough, and it's something we've got to look at. I apologise to the fans for what they've seen, they've paid a lot of money."

McGurk, captaining the side in the absence of Manny Panther, added: "Maybe we need more leaders out there, more communication from everyone.

"The goals that went in were really sloppy. We've got to put it right on Tuesday."

Walker has pledged to sort out York's defensive problems over the summer.

He added: "We've had a big serious chat, we can't go doom-and-gloom all the time. We have to get back into it. Hopefully we will get a response on Tuesday."
