Dolan was bemused by his dismissal |
Terry Dolan has hit out at the York City board after his shock dismissal as manager at Bootham Crescent. Dolan and assistant boss Adie Shaw were relieved of their duties at the weekend, with the board citing financial reasons for their departure.
But Dolan was left bemused by the cash-strapped Third Division club's decision.
"I, perhaps more than most, fully understand the financial problems of lower division football and felt my experience would help the new owners, who had not been in football before," Dolan told BBC North Yorkshire.
"To describe myself as disappointed is something of an understatement. I know Adie Shaw feels the same.
"I am particularly disappointed because I was relishing the challenge of managing a real community club and taking on the Third Division with a team of youngsters.
"I understand the need to cut costs, but paying both myself and Adie to stay at home while paying someone else to do our jobs seems a funny way to go about it.
"I am now seeking the advice of the League Managers Association.
"Both Adie and I regret not having the opportunity to say a personal goodbye to the players.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them and thank the backroom staff for their help and loyalty during my time at York City."
Sophie McGill of the York board defended their decision.
"It was purely a financial decision and a very difficult decision as Terry and Adie performed wonders here last season," McGill told BBC North Yorkshire.
"But we've had to look a the club's finances and we really can't sustain those two salaries.
"In most cases football clubs just sack their managers.
"But we didn't think that was fair to Terry and Adie because of their loyalty to York City Football Club that we treated them like that, so we are honouring their contracts.
"But obviously if Terry and Adie were to walk into new jobs in the next few weeks we would no longer be paying their salaries and it would be a big saving for the club.
"We have a number of candidates in mind and have been interviewing over the weekend and would like to make a decision as soon as possible."
