Danny Williams admits Football League survival is a 'tough' ask

Danny Williams insists rock bottom Wrexham 'deserve what they get' after their 4-1 mauling at leaders MK Dons.

The fans favourite hit out at Wrexham's habit of conceding sloppy goals in the wake of another defensive horror show at stadium:MK on Tuesday.

Wrexham are set to drop out of the Football League for the first time in their history as they're seven points from safety with four games to go.

Williams said: "Mistakes keep costing us dear and we deserve what we get."

Williams is one of Wrexham's home-town players and the former Liverpool trainee aided the club's great escape from relegation on a dramatic final day of last season.

But the 28-year-old knows that a similar Houdini act is unlikely as The Dragons would need to win all of their remaining games to survive and hope the teams above them continue losing.

Such a quest is a tall order bearing in mind Wrexham have secured just two points from their last available 18.

"Last year we were closer to the pack," conceded Williams.

"It is a very hard task and if we did survive, it would be a much greater achievement than our last year's escape act.

"But while it is still mathematically possible, we'll give it a go.

"It would be criminal if we gave in, the fans aren't giving up and neither will we. We'll keep fighting."

The Dons strolled to a fourth successive victory and the leaders will secure promotion to League One should Stockport lose at home to Mansfield on Wednesday.

Wrexham, in contrast, are all but doomed to dropping into non-league and ending their 87-year stay in the Football League.

MK Dons had virtually won the top versus bottom League Two clash within the opening ten minutes as Danny Swailes and Aaron Wilbraham scored.

Neil Roberts' penalty was mere consolation for Wrexham as Sean O'Hanlon and Wilbraham's late second ensured the visitors a thrashing.

"We actually played some good stuff against the best team in this division," maintained Williams.

"We passed the ball well and did OK but the score-line suggests we got battered and that's the most important part of football.

"Conceding sloppy goals have been the story of our season.

"The manager Brian Little must get so frustrated, they scored with their first attack.

"They went 2-0 up pretty quickly and for a team in our position, it was always going to be an uphill struggle against the leaders especially for a team that doesn't score many goals."
