Wrexham say that referee Eddie Ilderton was to blame for their heavy 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. The game was level for 49 minutes before Dragons defender Steve Roberts was dismissed and conceded a penalty for fouling Joey O'Brien in the area.
"The referee gave them the game," said Wrexham midfielder Alex Smith.
"We thought there was a great chance of getting three points, but it was a terrible decision, the player was laughing as he went down."
Wrexham manager Denis Smith was upset with Wednesday's second goal as he felt that Owls striker Kenwyne Jones had collided with defender Dennis Lawrence.
"I'd like to see the incident on video, but that was the goal that killed it," Smith told BBC Sport Wales. "Sheffield Wednesday are flying at home, and when you are facing them and over 20,000 fans being down to 10 men doesn't help.
"I could have done without the two new year games, and so could the club.
"There's going to be a lot of hard work to do this season if we're going to get to safety.
"I'd like to change things, like to change players, but at the moment I can't - and that's frustrating."
