Trundle was given his chance in football by Swansea's Brian Flynn |
Newly-promoted Wrexham may have to find up to 20,000 extra to keep striker Lee Trundle at the club. If Trundle accepts a new contract at the Racecourse Ground, it will trigger a further payment of 15,000-20,000 incorporated in the deal that took the player to Wrexham from Rhyl in February 2001.
The news has come as a blow to Wrexham boss Denis Smith as he bids to hold onto the 26-year-old, who is also wanted by Swansea City.
"I've never come across a deal like this in all my time as a manager," Smith told the Daily Post newspaper.
"If it means Wrexham have to find an extra sum of money in order to keep Trundle, it could put me at a major disadvantage compared to other managers.
"It can't be in Rhyl's best interests because they will get nothing if he does not sign for us, so it does not add up.
"I certainly was not aware of this clause in the original transfer deal, which effectively means keeping Lee will cost me far more money than I had envisaged."
