Wrexham have announced that Denis Smith will succeed Brian Flynn as the club's manager.

The former York, Sunderland, Bristol City and Oxford manager was unveiled by Wrexham at a news conference on Monday morning. He has been given a two-year contract.

No announcement has been made regarding his assistant.

It is also unclear whether Joey Jones, one of Flynn's assistants during his 12-year reign, will be staying at the club.

He will meet Smith on Monday afternoon to discuss a possible partnership.

Smith, 53, first made his name as a manager during a five year spell at York City where he won the old Fourth Division and established them as a Third Division side.

Success

But his most successful managerial spell came at Sunderland.

He won the Third Division during his first season in charge in 1987 and then led the Rockermen to the First Division in 1990.

Sunderland where eventually relegated on the final day of the season, and Smith left the club a few months into the following season.

His latest managerial position was a disappointing eight month spell at Oxford United last year.

He lost 19 of his 30 games in charge and his departure from the club came just a week before Wrexham visited the Manor Ground and secured a memorable 4-3 win.

Before turning to management, Smith enjoyed a 15-year career as a defensive stalwart, most notably with Stoke City where he made 493 appearances and scored 41 goals.

He inherits a Wrexham side that have won just one of their 10 league games and sit second from bottom of the Second Division.
