Wrexham are looking for a new manager after Brian Flynn and his assistant Kevin Reeves left the Racecourse on Monday.

Flynn had been in charge at Wrexham for 12 years and was the league's third longest-serving manager behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Crewe's Dario Gradi.

Joey Jones, along with players Brian Carey, Darren Ferguson and Kevin Russell, will take charge of the side for the game at home to Port Vale on Tuesday and against Peterborough four days later.

Earlier this month, Flynn, Reeves and Jones announced they would be leaving the Racecourse when their contracts expired at the end of the season.

But a meeting at the club with managing director David Rhodes on Monday ended with both Flynn and Reeves departing.

Rhodes said: "We felt the club had to go forward and Brian didn't think he could take us any further so we mutually agreed to part company.

"Obviously after 12 years it was a sad day, but both sides felt it was for the betterment of Wrexham Football Club.

"Once Brian had made the statement that he wanted to leave at the end of his contract, I think the club became destabilised.

"We want to get stability back as soon as possible and push back up the table.

"Joey Jones is staying to help us through the next two games. He is, by his own admission, not a front man, but he has agreed to stay to help Wrexham FC.

"It gives us a bit of breathing space to look at the club and see where we want to go."

One of the players in charge against Port Vale, Kevin Russell, said: "We have got to try to separate the squad from what is going on. But I know that they will be doing their utmost to win for the gaffer.

"He has built up the football club over the last 12 years, all the facilities are there, the training facilities are there and there's a good squad.

"But whoever comes in will get 100 per cent backing from everyone."

Wrexham have made a disappointing start to the new term, lying two places off the bottom of Division Two after suffering three consecutive defeats including a 5-0 drubbing at Tranmere.

Flynn, who took over from Dixie McNeil in 1989, led the club to numerous memorable successes.

The side won promotion to the Second Division in 1993, represented Wales in the European Cup Winners' Cup and won the FAW Premier Cup three times in four attempts.

But it is perhaps in the FA Cup where Flynn and Wrexham enjoyed most success. They famously beat Arsenal at the Racecourse and reached the quarter-finals in 1997.

Shrewsbury boss Kevin Ratcliffe has been installed as favourite for the vacancy with Neville Southall, Barry Horne, Jan Molby, Ian Rush and John Aldridge among the other names linked with the job.
