McCarthy's side are on course to go up despite not winning over Christmas

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has revealed that he has set his side a target of 92 points to secure promotion to the Premier League.

"The target always, I believe, is 92 points," he told BBC WM after Monday's 2-2 draw with Blackpool.

Since the second tier of English football was restructured in 1988, only McCarthy's old club Sunderland have scored 90 points and missed promotion.

The Black Cats finished third in the 1997-8 season, losing in the play-offs.

McCarthy added: "If you get two points a game all the way through the season and you don't go up you'd be very unfortunate.

"But because of the way it's been, there's been a few of us in advance of that total of two points per game.

"Then there's the others chasing - Cardiff are still battering away, Sheffield United are, Burnley are. It's a tough old league."

Wolves have 58 points from 26 games and lead Reading and Birmingham by seven points, although all three teams faltered over the Christmas period, with only Blues winning either of their fixtures.
