Peterborough striker Aaron McLean could cost Wolves in excess of 5m if they want to sign him.
Posh director of football Barry Fry insists the League One club want 3m up front for the 25-year-old, with a further 2m if Wolves are promoted.
"To let everyone know in Wolverhampton, we won't be letting him go for less than I've told you," Fry told BBC WM.
"Wolves are a proper club. They should be in the Premier League. If they bought Aaron he'd take them there."
It's put up or shut up really, and go away
Barry Fry warns Wolves
McLean scored 33 goals last season as Peterborough gained promotion from League Two, and might relish the chance to link up again with his former Grays Athletic team-mate Michael Kightly.
But Fry and the Peterborough board have resisted two initial offers from Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey.
"When I saw Jez last week we had a chat," said Fry. "I told him my chairman won't stand in the way, but he wants 3m up front, 2m if they get promoted, some add-ons and a sell-on.
"He said that's not going to happen, so I said that's the end of it. We won't let him go for any less. It's put up or shut up really, and go away."
