![]() | Wednesday, 28 June, 2000, 14:25 GMT Late run rescues Woking ![]() Striker Jamie Pitman is new recruit at Woking Woking ended the 1999/2000 with an impressive late burst which saved the club from dropping out of the Nationwide Conference. The late flurry of resistance saw Woking record five straight wins and five straight clean sheets before a final defeat at home against Scarborough. A ninth minute goal by Scarborough's Steve Brodie brought to a close Woking's 490 minute run without conceding a goal, falling short of the campaign record held by their opponents. Colin Lippiatt's side posted the second best defensive run behind Scarborough (681 minutes), with Hereford United (479 minutes) in third and Kettering Town (471 minutes) fourth. That said, the overall season was very disappointing and was The Cards' worst since gaining promotion in 19992. Manager Brian McDermott paid the price and Lippiatt, who had previously been assistant under Geoff Chapple at Kingfield, was appointed as number one. The team pulled together in adversity, and Lippiatt instilled spirit and fight back into the side with Darren Hay not letting the side down in front of goal. Woking gave their fans something to cheer about when they captured the Surrey Senior Cup but that was scant consolation for a hugely disappointing campaign. Lippiatt completed the signing of striker Jamie Pitman from Yeovil in the summer - and he should play a vital role in the future. | Other top Woking stories: Links to top Woking stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
