Smith was Martin Allen's first signing as manager at Milton Keynes |
Defender Jamie Smith, who was released by Milton Keynes Dons at the end of last season, has been forced to retire because of a persistent knee injury. Smith, 32, began his career at Wolves, and also played for Crystal Palace, Fulham, Bristol City and Brentford before joining the Dons last summer.
"After talking it over with the specialist again, he told me it was the end," He told Dons website.
Dons' boss Paul Ince has opted not to offer keeper Sam Russell a new deal.
