Martinez was unhappy after his side conceded a late penalty

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has queried why Lee Probert was allowed to referee the Latics' game against Everton.

On Saturday, acting as fourth official, Probert came under fire over his handling of Arsene Wenger's dismissal in Arsenal's loss at Manchester United.

He then refereed Wigan's 2-1 defeat at Everton on Sunday, booking seven players and giving a disputed penalty.

"They should give the ref some time and space and it wasn't ideal for him to be refereeing this game," said Martinez.

Wenger was sent to the stands when Probert called over referee Mike Dean after the Arsenal manager kicked a water bottle along the touchline after Arsenal were denied a late equaliser for offside.

Following his sending off, Wenger was unaware of where to go and firstly moved to the Arsenal dugout and then the main stand at Old Trafford before being ushered along the touchline to the tunnel as the game concluded.

But the Premier League referees' chief Keith Hackett has said Wenger will get an apology for the incident, which was also criticised by the League Managers Association chief Richard Bevan.

Bevan claimed Probert "totally failed to manage the situation and created a needless pressure point".

On Sunday, Probert awarded Everton a stoppage time-penalty for a foul by Emmerson Boyce's tackle on Jo which Leighton Baines converted to give Everton 2-1 win.

Martinez added: "With their penalty, Jo was very clever and he could see the tackle coming, he left his standing leg there for the contact. I am not sure just how much contact there was.

"That is not the reason we lost. There were a couple of decisions before that, little things that allowed Everton to maintain their momentum."
