Scharner (left) joined Wigan after impressing against England in 2006
Austria coach Josef Hickersberger says he has no plans to recall Wigan's Paul Scharner despite the defender ending his self-imposed international exile.
Scharner, 27, who quit international football in 2006 after a fall out with Hickersberger, met him on Sunday.
"He said he'd be willing to play again at Euro 2008 but I said in 2006 that his decision to leave the team meant he was giving up on that," said the coach.
"Barring exceptional circumstances any Euro return for Paul remains unlikely."
Hickersberger said the way Scharner had left the camp had damaged his chances of getting back in the side for the tournament taking place in Austria and Switzerland.
"He aimed a lot of comments at the national team immediately after his withdrawal which were not all helpful to a successful working relationship," he added.
"For this tournament, where we are clearly massive outsiders, we need to be a really closely-knit team and we have already started to develop a real team spirit as we showed in our sporting performance against Germany."
Last month, Hickersberger was more lenient when dealing with another England-based defender, Middlesbrough's Emanuel Pogatetz, recalling him for the friendly 3-0 loss to Germany.
Like Scharner, Pogatetz withdrew from the national team in 2006, citing similar differences of opinion with the coach.
