Baines was released as a teenager by Liverpool |
Wigan defender Leighton Baines has signed a new three-year deal which will keep him at the JJB Stadium until 2009. Manager Paul Jewell told the club's website: "He has risen with the club from Division Two and has really stood out in the Premiership."
Baines, 21, still had a year to run on his previous contract.
The England Under-21 international joined Wigan as a 16-year-old making his first-team debut in 2002 and has been a regular in the team this season.
Jewell added: "It is a massive step up in class required to stay afloat at this level but he has taken to Premiership football like a duck to water and I know he can go on to have a long career at the top."
