Wigan boss Paul Jewell has made his first summer signing, with the capture of Crystal Palace defender Fitz Hall on a four-year deal. The Latics paid an undisclosed fee, reportedly �3m, for the 25-year-old, who had spent two years at Palace.
"It's a great boost that we've beaten off such stiff competition to land him," Jewell told his club's website.
"He has everything you could look for in a defender - he's strong, athletic, aggressive and has bags of pace."
The Latics boss added: "He's in the prime of his career, he's as comfortable at right-back as he is at centre-half, and that's extremely useful at this level.
"He's played in the Premiership before and I was extremely impressed with how he handled the pressure."
Jewell is also continuing to chase the West Brom trio of Curtis Davies, Zoltan Gera and Nathan Ellington, who left Wigan last summer.
Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace has insisted that none of the club's star players are for sale, despite the club's relegation from the Premiership - and rejected a combined bid for the trio from Wigan last week.
The club have now submitted separate bids for all three players, rather than looking to land them in a multi-million pound package deal.
