Jewell will have money to spend in the Premiership |
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says he will give Latics boss Paul Jewell up to 25m to strengthen his squad after they won promotion to the Premiership. Whelan told BBC Radio Five Live: "After taking us to the dreamland Paul will know we've got to strengthen, and I shall help him and back him.
"I'm not keen on bringing in foreign players just because of their name. We want players who will play with pride.
"I suppose we are going to have to look at spending 10m to 25m."
Whelan has already pumped millions into the club but does not mind spending more.
He added: "I've not got a lot of change out of 75m I suppose, what with building the ground and picking the club up and buying players.
"But it's money that I would only have given to the government on my death so I may as well enjoy it and let the people of Wigan enjoy it with me.
"And if we can stabilise ourselves in the Premiership and start to compete with clubs like Blackburn Rovers, Bolton and Birmingham then we're fine, and we're looking forward to that."
