Paul Jewell has vowed "to pull out all the stops" in a bid to get Wigan promoted next season after being named as the club's third manager in just over two months.

Jewell has returned to management after just three months out of the game following his sacking by Sheffield Wednesday, and to Second Division Wigan following his four seasons as a player with the club in the mid 1980s.

Jewell was appointed within 72 hours of being sounded out by Wigan chairman David Whelan.

He has appointed Chris Hutchings as his number two at The JJB Stadium.

I will have a look to see where we need strengthening, but as I'm starting from scratch, I will be keeping an open mind

Jewell and Hutchings enjoyed a successful partnership during their days at Bradford, initially guiding the Bantams into the top flight for the first time in the club's 77-year history in 1999 before last-day Premiership salvation a year later.

Jewell then remarkably walked out on Bradford last summer to take over at Wednesday, while Hutchings was handed the reins at City, only to be sacked 13 league games into his debut managerial season.

Now the two men have joined forces again, with Jewell describing Hutchings as "a successful coach" and believing that "we can work well again."

Wigan started last season under Bruce Rioch, only for him to leave in early April and be succeeded by Steve Bruce, who walked out following the club's play-off semi-final defeat to Reading.

Jewell has his sights firmly set on promotion next season, confirming: "It is a forward-thinking club with an ambitious chairman, like myself.

"It is a club which, over the last couple of years, has been given a lot of backing financially and has deserved success.

"Although I am not in the business of making rash predictions, we will be looking to get out of this division and we will be pulling out all the stops to do so."

After barely being given a penny to spend at Wednesday, Jewell is grateful for the backing of Whelan, although has not yet been unable to consider whether the squad needs strengthening.

"I've enjoyed the last three months out," added Jewell, who scored 35 goals in 137 league appearances for Wigan from 1984 to 1988.

"It gave me time to relax and reflect, but I was starting to get itchy feet.

"But this has all happened so quickly. I only spoke to Wigan on Friday and I've hardly had any time to think.

"I will have a look to see where we need strengthening, but as I'm starting from scratch, I will be keeping an open mind."
