London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe has insisted that track and field remains the Olympic Stadium's primary purpose after the 2012 Games.
West Ham's new owners David Gold and David Sullivan have expressed an interest in taking over the stadium.
But Lord Coe reassured international athletics chief Lamine Diack that track and field will be its main function.
"But we have also made it clear we would explore other sports sharing the stadium," he added.
"It is sensible to look at other options for income streams and community use."
Lord Coe told an International Olympic Committee meeting in Vancouver that the Olympic Park Legacy Company is drawing up plans to look at possible options and will take the ultimate decision on the future of the £450m stadium.
"It's non-negotiable that this is a track and field facility and the president of the International Assocation of Athletics Federations knows that," he said.
Last month, after taking over the east London club, Sullivan said he hoped to persuade the government to let them move into the stadium.
Asked whether they would be happy to live with the track around the pitch, he said: "Ideally no, but there may be a way we could lay the running track for three months or something.
"I don't think running tracks work, particularly behind the goal. The customers are so far back it doesn't work."
