Moore is acknowledged as West Ham's greatest-ever player

West Ham are to retire the number six shirt to mark the 50th anniversary of Bobby Moore's debut for the club.

Moore played for the club from 1958-74, and was the club's most successful captain, lifting the FA Cup in 1964 and European Cup Winners' Cup a year later.

He also led England to the 1966 World Cup before dying from cancer in 1993.

The shirt will be worn for the last time in a memorial game on Saturday. The current number six, Matthew Upson, will then change to wearing number 15.

Moore, the greatest player in West Ham history, made his first appearance for the Hammers aged 17 against Manchester United in September 1958.

"When we were talking about ways to mark 50 years since his debut, there was only one true gesture that would do him justice - retiring the number six shirt he made his own," said chief executive officer Scott Duxbury.

The stand at the south end of Upton Park is already named in Moore's honour, and there are statues of him outside the ground and Wembley Stadium.
