Tevez and Mascherano limber up before match with Aston Villa

Following the high-profile arrivals of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, reports have suggested that the Hammers are set for a change of ownership.

"We are in a state of flux. There could be a takeover but I am going to protect the integrity and history of this club.

"We have always played and acted the right way. That is something that must not change," said Pardew.

With the Hammers playing in Europe this term after reaching last season's FA Cup final, Pardew would relish the chance to bring in more players.

His side face Palermo in the Uefa Cup on Thursday and Pardew added: "It would be great if I could build this club with extra finance.

"I like to think we've done a good job picking up a couple of gems from close to home but now perhaps we can look worldwide.

"Certainly the new guys have done enough in training to impress not just the staff but fellow players. They can possibly take us on to another level."

However, against Aston Villa, Pardew started with the Argentine duo on the bench.

Striker Tevez came on in the 1-1 draw but midfielder Mascherano is still awaiting his debut and Pardew says neither of the new boys are assured of a starting place in on Thursday.

"I honestly don't know how they will fit in and how they will evolve into the team yet," he said.

"That's the same with all new players who come in, not just them.

"It was the same with Marlon Harewood and all the guys I've brought here. It takes time to get to learn what players do well and what it needs to work on.

"It wasn't a statement of intent to leave them both on the bench. It was a football decision.

"The guys who played at Liverpool in our last match had done a fantastic job.

"We have to remember the spirit we have.

"The new signings are the cream on the cake - but the cake has to taste nice in the first place."
