Mikolanda has impressed Alan Pardew during the pre-season |
Premiership newcomers West Ham have signed Czech Republic Under-21 striker Petr Mikolanda following a trial. The powerful 20-year-old scored 13 goals for Viktoria Zizkov in the Czech second division last season.
The Hammers, who take on Blackburn on Saturday, have wanted to bring in a new striker since gaining promotion but may still want to sign a proven scorer.
Boss Alan Pardew has failed with bids for Liverpool's Milan Baros and Monaco marksman Emmanuel Adebayor.
Mikolanda described his move to West Ham as a "fairytale".
"I am very happy to have signed at West Ham. Teddy Sheringham was my hero when I was growing up.
"I remember watching his goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.
"I never dreamed that I would meet him, let alone be training alongside him."
Mikolanda scored two goals on the Hammers' tour of Sweden and another in the 2-2 draw at Yeovil.
Pardew, though, is likely to start the season this weekend with the strikers who earned the club promotion.
Despite his efforts to bolster his attack, Bobby Zamora and veteran frontman Sheringham look certain to share the responsibilities alongside Marlon Harewood against Blackburn at Upton Park on Saturday.
