Pardew signs new Hammers contract
West Ham manager Alan Pardew
Pardew controversially joined West Ham from Reading
West Ham manager Alan Pardew has signed a new five-year deal that will keep him at Upton Park until 2010.

Pardew steered the Hammers to promotion into the Premiership last season and he has impressively led them to ninth in the top-flight this term.

"I am delighted to have signed a new long-term contract," said 44-year-old Pardew, who took over in October 2003.

"I want to thank the chairman, Terry Brown, the board, the staff and most of all the fans for their support."

Pardew arrived in controversial fashion from Reading and endured some testing times before turning round the fortunes of a side he took over in the wake of their Premiership relegation in 2002/2003.

But now the West Ham boss is looking forward to building on the success he has already achieved.

There is so much to be optimistic about, however the hard work has only just begun

Pardew added: "We have a young and talented team both on and off the pitch and our ambition in the next five years is to create excitement and a side everyone can be proud of.

"We are all moving forward together. There is a positive atmosphere at Upton Park, at our Chadwell Heath training ground and on the field.

"The first phase was to get us out of the Championship and into the Premier League.

"The second phase was to consolidate our Premiership position and on that front progress has already been made.

"The third phase is to take the club forward and achieve success. That does not mean putting a millstone around our necks by saying next year we will set ourselves a target to qualify for Europe or win trophies.

"But as the belief grows so should our expectations. There is so much to be optimistic about, however the hard work has only just begun."
