Powell has spent the last three months on loan at West Ham |
West Ham have signed Charlton defender Chris Powell on a free transfer. Powell, 35, has spent the last three months on loan at West Ham and opted to make the move permanent.
The former England defender told Charlton's official website: "I leave with a heavy heart, every day at the club was special.
"I always felt I would finish my career at Charlton but I had a decision to make and West Ham were able to offer me regular football, which I wanted."
Powell made almost 200 League appearances for The Addicks and was part of the Charlton team that won promotion.
He joined Charlton from Derby County in June 1998, having made 89 League appearances for the Rams.
Prior to that, Powell made more than 250 first-team appearances for Southend in a six-year spell with the Essex club.
Powell, who also won five England caps, said: "Of course, playing in the Premiership, playing for England and winning the title were real highlights.
"But as well as regular football, West Ham have been able to offer me the excitement of going for promotion."
