Gera anxious to avoid play-offs

Winger Zoltan Gera says it is crucial West Brom claim automatic promotion rather than dropping into the play-offs after going top by winning at Wolves.

Tuesday's matchwinner at Molineux wants Albion to avoid another trip to Wembley having lost an FA Cup semi-final and last season's play-off final there.

"We don't want to play in the play-offs again because Wembley for us is not the best place," Gera told BBC WM.

"We are on top and I want to stay there for the last three games."

Gera turned out to be the hero at Molineux, sliding home a Kevin Phillips pass for the only goal of the game to seal all three points for the Baggies, who go into the weekend two points clear at the top of the Championship.

And in doing so he made up for his late penalty miss when the teams battled out a goalless draw at The Hawthorns in November.

"I didn't think about what would happen if I missed. I just concentrated on my chance and I'm very happy I scored," Gera said.

"It was a big, massive win for us. We won against a big enemy, so I'm very, very happy. We are getting closer to the Premier League so we are looking forward to the next three games."

West Brom travel to Norwich on Saturday, then follow that up with a home game against relegation-threatened Southampton and a final day trip to Queens Park Rangers.
