Portsmouth have signed forward Tommy Smith from Watford on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old told Portsmouth's website: "I spoke to Pompey manager Paul Hart and it sounded brilliant.

"Everything down here is what I was looking for. I'm sure I've made the right decision," added Smith, who was also wanted by Reading.

Portsmouth are also believed to be after Watford defender Matt Williamson, who has handed in a transfer request.

The Hornets had also accepted an offer from Reading for Smith, but the player opted to step up to the Premier League rather than stay in the Championship.

Hart said: "He's clever, infectious, enthusiastic and a hard worker. And he can play it lots of positions."

"Tommy is a player I have liked for a long time.

"He can play as a centre-forward, behind the centre-forward or out wide.

"He's going to be a great asset to us."

Smith, who has played for Derby and Sunderland, was left out of the Watford squad for Tuesday's Carling Cup second round tie at Leeds.

The forward was the subject of a £1.8m bid from Sheffield United earlier in the summer.
