Sir Elton John has given up his position as Watford's life president.

Watford parted company with manager Aidy Boothroyd this week, and lie just one place above the relegation zone.

A statement on the singer-songwriter's official website read: "In the light of developments, he feels he cannot remain in any formal position within the club.

"In a letter to Watford chairman Graham Simpson, Elton affirmed that he would always be a fan of Watford. He wishes them every success in the future."

John had only last month expressed concerns at the running of the club, and voiced concerns over their future.

The superstar has been a life-long fan of the Hornets, and has had two spells as chairman. He first took charge in 1976 when the club were in the then Fourth Division.

He was also to see the club promoted to the top flight twice and reach the FA Cup final during his chairmanship.

Meanwhile, the Hornets have appointed former assistant boss Keith Burkinshaw as a coach on a temporary basis.
