New Walsall boss gets cash boost

Walsall

New Walsall boss Jimmy Mullen will have more to spend in the transfer market than his predecessor Richard Money.

The former Burnley manager is set to benefit from the cash brought in by the sales of Daniel Fox and Scott Dann to Coventry in January.

"The money Jimmy has to bring players in will be far in excess of what Richard had last year," Saddlers owner Jeff Bonser told BBC WM.

"Each year we try to improve the budget that the manager has."

At a Bescot Stadium press conference to officially acknowledge Mullen's appointment, Bonser explained that it had not been possible to make any permanent signings in the winter transfer window because the Fox and Dann deals had gone through very late.

It was impossible to go into the transfer market two hours before the deadline with a plan to buy players

Walsall owner Jeff Bonser
"The money that came in is over a 12-month period," said Bonser. "It stacks up to about 1.1m but, at that time in January we only had a third of that, about 350,000.

"That was received on transfer deadline day, so it was impossible to go into the transfer market two hours before the deadline with a plan to buy players.

"All we could do was bring loan players in, which we did, a number of them at very high wages. Some of them, with hindsight, didn't do what we expected them to do."
